Green Hold Descent Mishap

Cinnamon Bun

Green Hold Descent Mishap is the expedition’s perilous disembarkation from the Silver Boot into Green Hold, a small settlement viewed from roughly two hundred meters above the ground. The descent turns an ordinary arrival into a test of equipment, nerve, and bodily control: Gabriel reaches the ground safely, Amaryllis simply steps into empty air because she is a harpy, and Broccoli Bunch’s rappel nearly fails before a desperate landing leaves a crater in the road. The incident is comic in its embarrassment but serious in its physical stakes, showing how quickly travel in this world can shift from controlled procedure to exposure to death.

Setting and Preparations

Green Hold appears tiny from the air. Its houses look like large rectangles, its surrounding walls form only a rough outline, and its central square is surrounded by more homes than Threewells had. Small farms spread around the town, with many farmhouses positioned beside the roads leading inward. This bird’s-eye view makes the settlement seem orderly and miniature, but the same height that reduces it to a pattern of buildings creates the danger of entering it.

The crew prepares to put the passengers ashore by removing part of the Silver Boot’s railing at the place where the gangplank had been installed on arrival. Gabriel checks whether the passengers have brought their belongings and warns that the ship cannot return for anything forgotten. Broccoli Bunch has a full pack, while Amaryllis has no equipment at all, a detail that makes Broccoli increasingly uneasy because it suggests that she will need to purchase all her gear in town. The practical question of luggage therefore accompanies the larger question of how either traveler will safely reach the ground.

The Descent Begins

Gabriel introduces rappelling as the method of descent and asks whether Broccoli has done it before. Broccoli knows the technique but points out that ordinary rappelling involves something to kick off from and a mountain, not two hundred meters of empty air. The height also attracts the attention of people below, who look up eagerly at the airship and its passengers.

Gabriel answers the hesitation with the principle that every dangerous procedure has a first attempt. He secures his flask to his belt, kicks the rope over the side, and lets it tighten against a metal bar tied to the ship. On the ground, the grenoil places four handles with small pulleys, demonstrates how to position the device, and then walks off the edge. His descent remains fast and is made without a harness, but the rappel slows him enough for him to reach the ground without being killed.

Broccoli takes another device and waits for the rope to become loose enough to grasp. Amaryllis asks whether the descent is really as simple as Gabriel has made it appear. Broccoli answers by suggesting that they could descend together and hold hands if she is afraid, but Amaryllis responds not with caution but with disdain: she rolls her eyes, does not even pick up her own rappel, and walks directly off the edge. Broccoli screams her name, only to learn from Florian that her harpy nature makes the fall survivable. The moment contrasts technical dependence with species-specific ability; what is a lethal risk for an ordinary passenger is, for Amaryllis, an inconvenience she can ignore.

Broccoli’s Mishap

After watching Amaryllis descend unaided, Broccoli tries to make the departure seem equally confident. Broccoli waves to Captain Isaac and calls goodbye, while Isaac replies that they will see each other again if the winds allow it. Unable to think of a cooler farewell, Broccoli hops over the side.

The attempt immediately goes wrong. The rappel becomes taut, but the device slows the fall far less than expected. As the ground rises toward Broccoli, the previously manageable distance of two hundred meters suddenly appears alarmingly short. Broccoli pours stamina into the legs and prepares to jump at the last possible moment, striking the ground feet first. The impact consumes nearly all the available stamina, reducing it from completely full to just short of empty, and the ground caves into a crater beneath the landing.

The result is both successful and humiliating. Broccoli survives and stands up, but Gabriel calls it a good landing while warning that rappelling in a skirt risks giving the entire town another show. Broccoli pushes the skirts down and steps out of the crater, turning the physical consequence of the failed descent into a public embarrassment. The episode’s comedy does not erase the danger; it depends on the fact that the landing could easily have ended differently.

Gabriel’s Expertise and Aftermath

Broccoli’s anger initially focuses on whether Gabriel deliberately allowed the dangerous descent. The suspicion fades when Gabriel points toward the grenoil whose fall he has slowed and explains that he used Featherfall. He describes the spell as a professional necessity: in his line of work, a person learns to cast it or learns to collect the remains after a fatal fall. The remark reveals that Gabriel’s apparent casualness is supported by specialized magical knowledge rather than mere recklessness.

Featherfall also clarifies the unequal conditions of the descent. Gabriel has the skill to protect another passenger, the equipment and experience to control his own landing, and the composure to treat the entire operation as routine. Broccoli has a rappel device and enough stamina to survive the impact, but lacks Gabriel’s command of the situation. Amaryllis bypasses both forms of preparation because she is a harpy. France, meanwhile, gasps at Gabriel’s maneuver, making the spell’s intervention visible as the difference between a controlled landing and catastrophe.

Once Broccoli reaches the road, Gabriel orders attention directed toward Amaryllis, who had wanted to leave before sunset. His dismissive claim that he does not care about her does not prevent him from monitoring the group’s arrival. The expedition has therefore entered Green Hold, but not through a dignified or carefully managed landing: one passenger descends by species ability, one by professional spellcraft, and Broccoli by a malfunctioning or inadequate rappel followed by a crater-making impact. The incident establishes the town as the destination of the mission while making the journey itself the first immediate ordeal.
